EMIC-GEM Offsite & Modular Construction Learning Modules

Take a closer look into our learning modules, coming in Autumn 2022.

Introduction

On completion of this unit learners will be able to demonstrate an understanding of the fundamental principles of offsite and modular construction. They will understand the personas involved in the industry and the challenges and barriers it’s faced with.

Digital Design

On completion of this module, learners will be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills in Digital Design for Offsite Construction through the application of digital design software, in compliance with codes and standards, and range of materials through the creation of Building Information Modelling (BIM).

Estimating

This module is focused on Estimating and Commercial for Offsite Construction. Through the application of Building Information Modelling (BIM)-enabled software, it will become clear to the learner the importance of DfMA + D (Design for manufacture and assembly and deconstruction), life cycle costing, tender analysis, procurement, contract law, material and products and lean methodologies.

Offsite Manufacturing

Particularly targeting skilled workers and Construction Managers, this module will help the learner understand Offsite Manufacturing (OSM) for Offsite Construction; i.e., manufacturing processes, construction methods and materials used, in accordance with Health and Safety legislation and codes and standards.

Logistics

Learners will be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills in logistics within Offsite Construction. Logistics is the backbone to good project coordination, and students will learn how logistics is the key to the precise planning and programming to offsite construction   from the sourcing of materials to manufacturing and construction through to delivery and installation.

Onsite Placement

Targeting skilled workers and Construction Managers in particular,  learners will be able to understand the knowledge and skills required in Onsite Placement by understanding the joining processes, different methods and materials employed integrating the  manufactured components and elements.

Site Management

This module will allow learners to demonstrate the knowledge and skills in Site Management and integration for Offsite Construction. Through the completion of the module, learners will be able to understand offsite systems and procedures and the logistical needs to ensure project is delivered on time through correct planning and programming, in accordance with Health and Safety legislation and codes and standards.

Sustainability

The sustainability  module aims to complement the six modules aimed at certain personas within the offsite and modular construction industry and provides a deeper insight into some of the aspects around sustainability that might have been briefly mentioned in those modules. This includes looking at future skill needs for the transition to Industry 4.0, particularly in relation to reducing embedded carbon. It will also discuss how waste can be reduced through, for example, circular economy and look at how modular construction can be used to retrofit old, energy inefficient buildings.
